We have only one week left this summer starting Friday 29 August and it is a fantastic time of year to visit the Yorkshire Dales. The weather is still generally very good and there are plenty of exciting seasonal events taking place.
If you are interested in history then you might like to visit nearby Bolton Castle - the spectacular medieval fortress that was used to imprison Mary Queen of Scots in 1569. They are hosting a Spanish Armada weekend on 30/31 August which will bring to life the 16th century household as they prepare for battle. (www.boltoncastle.co.uk)
Staying with the historical theme, Beamish, the Living Museum of the North, is holding a special festival that celebrates agricultural power from the past. Here you will find everything from horse drawn vehicles to trams and traction engines. This is in addition to all that this amazing facility has to offer as it recreates daily life from the Georgian times to the 1950s. It really is a great day out! (www.beamish.org.uk)
Another option is to explore the fantastic scenery of the Yorkshire Dales by steam train on the Wensleydale Railway which has 16 miles of authentic track. Monday 1 September is Yorkshire Day so why not time your visit to coincide with the celebrations? (www.wensleydalerailway.com)
Finally, if you like theatre then the world-renowned Globe Theatre company will be performing Shakespeare's King Lear at the Georgian Theatre Royal in Richmond from 27 - 30 August. This is the country's oldest working theatre in its original form so you are in for a fabulous experience on both counts. (www.georgiantheatreroyal.co.uk)
All these events are in addition to the glorious walking and cycling on the doorstep and the many sightseeing opportunities in the area.
Why not treat yourself to what will be a wonderful week away?
