Early summer is the best time to see the famous Yorkshire Dales flowering hay meadows. These upland gems are a riot of colour and many are designated Sites of Special Scientific Interest. The Muker area in particular provides one of the best places to see upland hay meadows from public rights of way in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, with public footpaths taking you right through the middle of these stunning habitats.
Wildflowers commonly seen are meadow buttercup, selfheal, pignut and red clover, with more unusual species like bistort, eyebright, yellow-rattle, betony and globeflower also found. These wildflowers are accompanied by hay meadow grasses such as sweet vernal grass, common bent and crested dog's-tail.
