Yorkshire is crowned Europe's best!

Yorkshire has been named Europe's Leading Destination at the World Travel Awards - for the second time in a row - beating the likes of Rome, Paris, London and Berlin to claim the award for Europe's best holiday destination in 2014.

This comes in a year when Yorkshire has already been placed firmly on the international map when it hosted the Tour de France's Grand Depart in July.

As the racers sped through the Yorkshire Dales, Tour de France race director Christian Prudhomme told the BBC; "When you said you would deliver the grandest Grand Depart it was the truth, you have raised the bar for all future hosts of the Tour de France." With the world's press focussed on it, and bathed in sunlight, Yorkshire certainly looked fantastic that day.

The award follows hot on the heels of another tourism accolade when last year the county was voted the third best region to visit in the world by travel guide company, Lonely Planet.
