One absolute rule. Don't use SatNav within 30 minutes of The Old Vicarage. There is a possibility of you adding a frustrating 25 minutes to your journey.
The Old Vicarage is set on its own and enjoys perfect peace and tranquility. Access to the property is via a farm track. It is perfectly navigable but does require careful driving.
There are several ways of leaving main roads and start the approach to Marrick. Below is one of the most straightforward. If you choose another way, be sure to use a paper map, and also be aware that there have been some junction changes on the A1 in recent years.
Step by step instructions
- Travelling along the A1 northbound or southbound, come off at Scotch Corner (Junction 53 – A1/A66 interchange). Once on the roundabout, take the A6108 signposted Richmond. (The Old Vicarage is approximately half an hour away from here.)
- Drive through the village of Skeeby to Richmond and follow the A6108 round two roundabouts and out of Richmond towards Reeth.
- Approximately five miles out of Richmond, take a right turn over a narrow stone bridge signposted ‘Marske, Marrick and Hurst.’ Carry on to the hamlet of Marske. At the bottom of Marske, turn left up the steep hill, following the signs to Marrick.
- Follow this country road until you reach the crossroads. Here you take a left turn to the hamlet of Marrick.
- On approaching Marrick, proceed down the hill, then go straight on, off the main village road, down a lane which is signposted as a dead end. (If you pass the village hall and post box then you have gone too far – come back!) Go past the Old School House and also Park Lodge. At this point, the road surface changes into two strips of tarmac down a narrow stone lane between walls.
- Follow this narrow track in the direction of the walls then proceed carefully and right-ish along the tarmac strips down the lane (0.5 miles), through three fields. You will then see The Old Vicarage directly below you. (Do NOT go straight ahead and onto the property further on amongst the woods.) There is a small stone Old Vicarage sign here and a tall stone gatepost set in the ground. Turn right carefully, slightly back on yourself and down the steep slope to The Old Vicarage. You have arrived! Please note that the last mile of the journey is on an unmade farm track in some places and requires careful driving at slow speeds.
