Beamish - The Living Museum of the North, DH9 0RG
Based some 12 miles north west of historic Durham city, Beamish is well worth a visit. It is a huge, open-air, living museum that tells the story of the people of North East England. Very popular with young and old alike, it recreates houses, shops, a school, church, working farm and even a coal mine, from the Georgian period to the Second World War. Real trams and vintage buses transport you round the site. A highlight for the children is an old fashioned sweet shop, which has regular demonstrations of sweet-making. Situated on the outskirts of Bedale, this farm makes a great day out for the whole family. There are timed guided tours throughout the day to meet the animals and at certain times of year this includes bottle feeding lambs. While waiting for your tour there is plenty to do, including a large indoor play barn with sack slides and an outdoor go kart track. This unique ‘pleasure garden’ is probably unlike anywhere you will have visited before and is popular with both children and adults. While suitable for all ages, if your child is particularly sensitive then caution should be taken with some of the ‘exhibits’. The four-acre garden comprises a labyrinth of tunnels, chambers, follies and surprises – discover the temple of the underworld, paths and passages that lead nowhere, a huge pyramid made of translucent glass, and several extraordinary statues.
