Beamish - The Living Museum of the North, Beamish, DH9 0RG
Based some 12 miles north west of historic Durham city, Beamish is well worth a visit. It is a huge, open-air, living museum that tells the story of the people of North East England. Very popular with young and old alike, it recreates houses, shops, a school, church, working farm and even a coal mine, from the Georgian period to the Second World War. Real trams and vintage buses transport you round the site. A highlight for the children is an old fashioned sweet shop, which has regular demonstrations of sweet-making. Allow a full day for visiting! Contact: 0191 370 4000.
