A rare and special arrival

The rolling pasture lands surrounding The Old Vicarage are home to some truly magnificent residents – a herd of Highland cattle, known for their distinctive long horns, shaggy coats, and gentle nature.

These iconic animals are a much-loved feature of the landscape and guests often pause to admire them as they graze peacefully, creating a picture-perfect countryside scene.

Now there is particular excitement as the first calves of the season are starting to arrive. Among them is an extra special new addition – a rare white Highland calf, an unusual but stunning colour for the breed. His mother, Olive, is a first-time mum and is doing a fantastic job caring for him. He’s already finding his feet, exploring his surroundings, and enjoying the recent spell of glorious Yorkshire sunshine.

Highland cattle are one of the oldest and hardiest breeds in the world, well suited to the rugged beauty of the Dales. With their thick, double-layered coats, they thrive in all weathers, from snowy winters to warm summer days.

Children, in particular, love getting involved with the Highlands, often helping with their feeding and grooming during their stay. There’s always a thrill when a calf is born, and young guests especially enjoy watching them take their first steps and settle in with the fold. It’s a truly memorable experience, offering a unique connection to the countryside and a chance to engage with the animals.
