These books were made for walking

Walking and reading are two popular pastimes with guests staying at The Old Vicarage. During the day it's great to stride out across the beautiful Yorkshire Dales, exploring the myriad of local paths and bridleways, and in the evening there's nothing better than curling up in the cosy living room with a good book.

That's why we think the Richmond Walking and Book Festival - which so effectively combines these two recreations - is such an excellent event. This year it runs from 24 September until 2 October and the programme includes talks by Professor Joan Fletcher, one of the world's leading Egyptologists; Charlotte Bronte biographer Juliet Barker; and the former MP Chris Mullin. There are also dozens of walks led by knowledgeable local guides. Many of these are close to The Old Vicarage such as the Calver Hill circuit, Arkengarthdale (home of the historic leadmines) and the Marske circular walk.

The festival does provide a wonderful opportunity to plan a themed break but you don't have to wait until it is on. At The Old Vicarage you can pursue both activities all year round!
